Database assesses cosmetic ingredients

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Ever wonder what’s in your soap or shampoo?  What kinds of things are you using to wash up the little one?  Chances are surprisingly good that you’ve unknowingly been putting lead, mercury and cow’s placenta on your skin and in your hair.

Well-researched and brilliantly documented, the Skin Deep database assesses ingredients by comparing everything from toothpastes and sunscreen to moisturizers and contact solution for known toxins as well as any potentially toxic ingredients under scrutiny by individual countries as well as by international organizations.

Researched and produced by the Environmental Working Group, the database looks beyond the marketing to individual ingredients, even ranking items marketed as ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ to look for any additives that may have been included.

Cosmetics is a multi-billion dollar industry with at least US$7-billion in sales of ‘natural’ cosmetics alone.  It’s about time that a resource such as this one were available.
